What is a Chakapa?

The use of leaves, herbs and branches within ritual, healing and spiritual practices can be found across many cultures and traditions throughout history.

The Chakapa — also known as Shakapa or Shacapa — as we know it today is particularly associated with Indigenous Amazonian healing traditions, where bundles of leaves are used to create its distinctive rhythmic, rustling sound. Traditionally, Chakapas are often made using Pariana leaves, a tropical plant native to Central and South America, although the plants used can vary between regions and traditions.

When moved around the body, the leaves create a beautiful sound reminiscent of rainfall or wind moving through trees. Within Amazonian traditions, Chakapas may be used alongside icaros — ceremonial songs — as part of cleansing, grounding and energetic practices.

There is something incredibly powerful about this simple connection between sound, movement and nature.

Rooted in Tradition, Created with Intention

Spirit Shift Chakapas are our own contemporary expression of this ancient practice. Each one is handcrafted from natural dried foliage, including leaves personally foraged here in the UK, and created individually with intention.

Over the years, our Chakapas have found their way into the hands of sound practitioners, healers and ceremonial spaces around the world — something we feel incredibly honoured by.

Our signature crystal and coil design is created with the intention of protection and amplification. Within our spiritual practice, the crystal serves as an energetic holding space, where spirits and energies can be held until they are ready to be safely released back into nature.

No two Chakapas are ever exactly alike. Each has its own character, materials and story.

An Honour Close to Our Hearts

One particularly special moment was seeing our Chakapas in the hands of members of the Huni Kuin people of the Amazon.

We were privileged to create four Chakapas for members of the Huni Kuin to use during their travels and ceremonial work in the UK. We were told that although their Chakapas would traditionally be burned at the conclusion of their ceremonies, they formed such an affinity with ours that they chose to keep them for the remainder of their tour.

Seeing our creations being used by people with such a deep connection to the traditions that inspired the Chakapa was incredibly humbling — and remains one of the most meaningful moments in our journey.

Chakapas in Modern Sound & Ceremony

Today, Spirit Shift Chakapas are finding their place within modern sound healing, energy work, meditation and ceremonial practice.

Used by sound practitioners and facilitators, their distinctive rustling sound adds another organic layer to the soundscape — bringing the movement and voice of nature into the space.

It is a beautiful continuation of an ancient relationship between people, plants, sound and ceremony — honouring the traditions that came before us while allowing them to inspire new expressions in the modern world.
